Was trying to play using a Paximinus an hour ago and it was totally invisible to me except when I thrusted.
I suspect this is a much bigger problem with ships generally. I had problems with a wingship in several galaxies. Currently it is only the low tech/ popular ships that are being tested.
Upping the ambient lighting globally is the way to go.
Actually playing C1 and C2 together you can see that C1 is much more user friendly in this respect. You should go to the C1 settings, which have been refined over 7 years play, and adjust if necessary from there.
