FIX PLX!! We know about relogging and re-entering the galaxy, but that's annoying if you have super long passwords or the warp is 10k+ distance away.

The problem is that the performance of our server on Amazon has been deteriorating over the course of about a week and a half. If you see the support forum for AWS, you'll see a lot of other people complaining about this, too. Every time we write to the EBS drive, it stalls the CPU for 1-3 seconds.
We've ordered two new dedicated servers from another company, since Amazon seems to be only getting worse and never better. Jey is working on setting them up now. _________________ For support, please create a support ticket here and I will get back to you as soon as possible. About Star Sonata. |

Thank you for the explanation and I hope everything moves along smoothly. _________________ Hi, I'm Anil, a long-time player turned developer. Don't know how much admins have actually researched the issue so I'll present my findings:
All moving objects are desyncing. if you fly your speed demon out at high speed and DONT TURN the origin of the bullets will continually separate from your ship on the screen. The emphasis on DONT TURN is required because if you turn, your client syncs your position with the server automagically. Now my understanding of how these things work is that to minimize bandwidth usage you don't sync with the server unless its absolutely necessary, and it uses simple physics (kinematic equations) and current positions (at initial sync) to keep the client up to date. Based on my observation with the speed demon (and other corroborating observations) I would guess that for whatever reason, client graphics are going slightly faster than they ought to be. or, conversely, server objects are moving slower than they should be. Oh also, torpedoes desync like mad, no idea whats going on there... Reloging or warping in and out of the galaxy fixes the problem temporarily because it syncs the object positions at that time. Further research shows that AI are not desyncing, I guess they belong in a category of objects that are updated "constantly". Hope this helps someone or at least explains it to the playerbase. _________________ Pies are yummy. |

Not entirely sure this is related, but shield charging is experiencing the same sort of time lag, with the client getting ahead of the server, then jumping back. its quite slight so i had to watch carefully to see it but its there.
OH I KNOW!! you put the servers on a spaceship going .2c so time is passing slower for the server than for the clients! Its connected to earth by ansible obviously so we don't notice any connection latency. _________________ Pies are yummy. |
