Something along the lines of "Hey X, here's your cash. I need you to do something." Typically works better than "Hey X, I've got your cash so you have to jump through whatever hoops I tell. you to..." as evidenced by your current predicament.

Not trolling, and its not an arguable point(current events already proved it). Fact is, when you attempt to control someone by seizing their assets you better damn well expect huge backlash. I'm just going to assume you've never learned how to handle people or been in a leadership position, because otherwise you would have known that putting stipulations and conditions on things that people feel entitled to(and in this case owned, and you took) is possibly the worst way to accomplish a task.
