Post Chosing a Class
So in effort to make the beginning of SS more appealing, i suggest right off the back we have to chose what class were going to use. So lets say you chose SD. You start in a completely different ship and gear then say a Zerk would, and obviously the bonus you get from SD 1 would have to be dramatically changed to accommodate this suggestion but i think this would be huge for SS...

Late to work ill write more on it later, or church take it away!

I like it. Most RPGs have you choose a class right off the bat and it's not a bad system at all.

Adding this to my idea would go hand in hand and get people addicted right away not once they hit tech 20+...

I've never been so aroused by an EF player who wasn't Spatzz. Do it.

YES. This is exactly what this game needs. A huge problem with the beginning of the game right now is that its identical for everyone...the pirates/earthforce decision is essentially meaningless. If everyone had 8 different options(16 with pirate/earthforce) then at the very least they'd have 16 different ways to try to start the game, if they sorta liked it but not quite enough! It would certainly improve the player maintenance of the early game.

i do indeed like the concept. A bit complicated to implement, but not at all impossible.

Amazing idea that would probably atleast keep newer players attention longer. Sometimes mainstream is the way to go..

Post Re: Chosing a Class
Gonna be the Devil's Advocate here and bring up something that other MMOs with this kind of thing have:

Character Deletion.

What's going to happen is that noobs will randomly, without prior information or knowledge of a class or side, choose one, and be unhappy. And since class changes are so goddamn annoying (also unknown to newbies), they will ragequit.

A cool way of fixing this is Jey writing a video player into the SS client, and having popup videos of each class in action before you choose one. You'd also need to swap back and forth in the side selection menu so you can see all the classes for each side. Obviously, the videos would be progressive videos; action from each chosen level zone (I.E. 0-100, 101-250, 251-500, 501-750, 750-1000, 1000+). Players (or devs, if you felt like recording yourselves after spawning in the items you'd need to replicate these levels) would record them and they'd be compiled into a video.

The videos could also have a narrator, verbally describing how the class plays as the video goes on.

Oh, and one more thing:

The initial bonuses of the classes would have to be VERY significant, to demonstrate their differences from the beginning. Zerker? tanky as hell. SD? fast as hell. ETC.

Obviously you could still respec. This would just be a jumpstart in the beginning.

red alert, love your forum avatar!

/* OT */

love this idea
currently when you pick a class at low lvl you wont even notice the bonusses...you could like, invest them in core skills instead of lvl 5 in X focus

Great idea, I really think this would make new players stick around longer than five minutes. If we could get this, and make all dead lowbie player ships regen up to full in half a minute, then a lot more people would give the game a fair chance.

Good work, Red!

Agreed! Plus, a screen similar to the one where the player chooses whether to be Volcom/EarthForce at character creation would be a nice addition too for classes. It could detail the bonuses/general playstyle of each class in a visual and interesting way, unlike the rather boring text filled missions at Lyceum, which don't currently do the importance of classes justice.

EDIT: Just read the rest of the thread, TCGM suggested pretty much the same thing already. :P

This great suggestion will never go in because it's to much work for our understaffed dev team shame...
