Post RNF Laser vs Ball Lightning
As the more perceptive of you have noticed I was quite annoyed by the recently change/buff to the RNF Laser, and I think that these weapons have gone from being great alternatives to one another to the RNF Laser being a direct upgrade, reducing setup diversity.

Old RNF Laser stats:
165 DPS
500 Range
100% Damage Splash @ 200 Range

New RNF Laser stats:
165 DPS
500 Range
75% Damage Splash @ 400 Range

Ball Lightning stats:
175 DPS
600 Range
50% Damage Splash @ 450 Range

Now, the reason I'm annoyed is that previously, both weapons had a simple and yet significant tradeoff: splash damage and range. The RNF laser gave much more concentrated splash DPS, while the Ball Lightning was the opposite: splash over a larger area. Both weapons were situationally useful and were in a good spot. For some runs, the RNF Laser was better, for others the BL was better. To add to this the adv gunner subskill which gave +100% splash range made the RNF Laser even stronger.

The change has basically made the RNF overshadow the BL. There is basically no situation now in which I'd prefer a BL, which I find quite sad. I'd recommend either reverting the change, or giving them the exact same DPS, while giving the RNF Laser 100% Splash Damage @ 225 Range, and the BL 50% Splash Damage @ 450 Range.

15% less range for 50% more dps.

If I had a choice, I'd pick RNF-Laser. The problem is that the range is very close and there are not many instances where an extra 200-300 range at the end result will be so critical that you NEED the Ball Lightning.

Which is one of the reasons why the change to the RNF Laser isn't well thought through. Especially with the subskill giving +100% splash range.

In a solo situation, 300 range isn't much, unless half the content glues you in place, and even then, there's warp devices.

In a squad setting, 300 range is child's play for a tractor ship to drag you across or pull enemies to you.

There are also Vortex stuff and zerk items.

Once again showing how little you know. 300 range is pretty significant in any situation.
