If we'd want to do this I imagine it's pretty easy to use the list of online characters that moderators have access to.

Yeah something like that anilv. So when you join you'll see how many players are active and this does not have to have dynamic updates of how many players are on. Only updated when you log on or rejoin.

The dev team wasn't wild about this but we did come up with a related idea of more All Chat shouts when various ubers are killed (including DG/instanced ubers). This would have a similar effect of notifying players when the community is active. We also were thinking about possible All Chat shouts when certain rare items are scooped. Furthermore, both of these scenarios could be accompanied by temporary global bonuses to every ship.
