I really liked Crucible when it came out but it seems to have been a one-time content piece that doesn’t do a whole lot now given you can just buy superitems.

I would propose sometime in the future to re-purpose Crucible by keeping the overall theme of it intact but modify it slightly to be a single player competitive ladder activity:

Proposal: Leave it as it is now but make no end to the waves of AI. Have them keep increasing indefinitely level after level as long as the player can keep staying alive doing them. Then at the end of each week there will be a public leader board listing the ranking of those who have attempted it in the previous week and how high they got in Crucible levels.

At the end of the week the top 3, or maybe top 5 ranked players for each class will then get a small token/turn-in type reward. The reason to divvy it up by class is some are better at soloing waves than others and this will account for that. The reward could be something like kalthi wreckage, allied commendation, or similar token type item that you turn in for rewards.

I think this would be a fun competitive way to make Crucible more noteworthy again by creating an endlessly reusable piece of content that players would be incentivized to do.

To add to this I do not believe for a second that introducing a new commodity is a good idea.

It is better to use a commodity of the times, that is preferably tradeable.

See: Dementium, Perilium, Lunarium

If you make it a challenge zone, you can probably remove all the earlier levels with the weak AI and just throw out the dangerous ones.

The goal in all other MMOs that feature something like this is to not trade the tokens to other players, which makes the concept of using stuff like Dem redundant, because the point is that you can't buy your way into the rewards. A lot of these rewards in other games are quite good, or, quite specialized for the activity in question, and being able to buy your way into the top tiers is another form of Pay 2 Win, even if it technically does not involve RL money.

by making the reward tradable you void this whole discussion since the commods can be obtained elsewhere

and they have a value, and they are exhaustible.

And if I could become a Warrior god by buying Legendary Warrior class gear instead of doing activities that reward it?
