Quote: We have developed a protocol to augment human sight to see into the near infrared range through human formation of porphyropsin, the protein complex which grants infrared vision to freshwater fish. Retinal, or Vitamin A (A1), which is found bound to opsin proteins is a keystone of the visual pathway. The cone cells are granted sharp color vision by the complex photopsin. The rod cells which provide us with night vision and recognition of movement do so utilizing rhodopsin. Both of the complexes consist of a type of protein bound to retinal. Porphyropsin differs from this in that it doesn't use retinal, but rather a derivation called 3,4-dehydroretinol, or Vitamin A2 (A2). The human body is fully capable of metabolizing and using A2; unfortunately the proteins which allow for transport through cell membranes have nearly 4 times the affinity for A1 compared to A2. We theorize that this can be overcome through a stringent Vitamin A1 restricted diet, supplemented with Vitamin A2. tl;dr - humans may be able to see infared light by limiting their vitamin A1 intake and supplementing their vitamin A2 intake. these scientists want to test it. |

But what would the point be of gaining infra-red eyesight?
I mean the main purpose. Please excuse my limited knowledge... |

when you stand next to a fire, most of the heat you feel is infared radiation. most objects emit infared radiation depending on how hot they are, its how thermal cameras work. even in complete darkness, there is still a decent amount of infared light bouncing around.
being able to see infared, is basically the same thing as thermalvision. |

Humans can already see in infrared... Barely, but they can. (as in, with googles that block all light but infrared and with the 440 watts/meter2 power of the sun...)
Maybe they should try some filters before they spend their money. Analogy: maybe they should search steam before launching a kickstarter _________________ http://forum.starsonata.com/download/file.php?id=8119 SunDog60 wrote: targeting my OWN slave because... reasons, and then MIRVing it. |

Analogy: maybe they should search steam before launching a kickstarter the point is doing it without technology. and they can start a kickstarter about whatever they damn please, people who want to fund it can, and people who think its a dumb idea dont have to fund it. thats the good thing about kickstarter. it doesnt matter how many assholes on the internet think your idea is dumb, it matters how many assholes on the internet think your idea is good. |

Fair enough. I actually like the idea. (totally missed the "without technology" part)

So the up shot of this is that could actually be true that eating carrots help you see in the dark.

Probably there's no use for the common man, maybe it has some military use, but still it requires strict diet, so it's not something you could achieve just like that.(not to mention side-effects of lacking vitamin A). I think wearing some googles or other equipment would be much better. _________________ Original Sybir /GodSteel My custom shader ┌∩┐(◣_◢)┌∩┐ |

I think wearing some googles or other equipment would be much better. You'd still be taking vitamin A, just a different type. I don't know what the effects would be if any, but if there are it would be due to lacking the right kind of vitamin A, not just lacking the vitamin. |
