the government has openly admitted that these people have little-to-no terrorism connection.

they're wasting millions of dollars doing this, for no real improvement in security. the reason it doesnt improve security is because it isnt meant to. its not about stopping violent attacks, its about stopping political dissidents from ever getting a career in politics. its intended to contain and deal with political threats to the two party system, hence why both parties are complicit in it and make no attempt whatsoever to stop it.

Check this out for who they were watching and why. I'm not excusing it, I'd just like for anyone interested to know exactly what was said in the documents and the explanation that the NSA gave.

They could care less about what TYT or Alex Jones say, they may be keeping tabs on what they are saying, but it is highly unlikely they are looking at Jesse Ventura's porn habits. Discrediting Jesse Ventura isn't necessary because he isn't going to convince any young kids from out in the country sides in the Middle East that the United States should be eradicated from the face of the planet.

I'm not a lemming, I've been paying attention to alternative news sources for the past 12 years. However, I also know enough to understand that Alt News is just as spinny and bullshit prone as any other news source.

well, the primary reason they're spying on these people is to gain information they can use to blackmail the subjects.

I.E. "you're gonna tell people that *absurd bullshit* is the conspiracy, and if you dont, we're gonna tell them every secret you have"

"alex jones radicalises people and turns them into terrorists" is the excuse, but "alex jones is listened to by large numbers of dissidents" is the real reason.

they can use this information to blackmail people into saying things that will discredit them

plus, a large portion of dissidents are christians. by revealing the porn habits of the leaders of dissident movements, the government can drive a wedge down the middle of those movements, splitting them, and weakening them significantly.

the tactic the NSA are using is particularly effective at dismantling heavily religious dissident groups (both islamic and christian ones), but it can also be used to dismantle almost any political group.

no group is safe. tea party, OWS, the libertarian party, ron paul's campaign, none of them are safe from blackmail, because everyone has secrets, some bigger than others.

the ultimate goal is to bar as many people from politics as possible, and control the politicians, by having dirt on all of them.

P.S. you have a distinctive lack of suspicion of their activities. but it is important that you recognise that this is possible. the problem is that powers like these can be abused by anyone in the chain of command. the president plus all of congress could infact be the victims of this, rather than the perpetrators.

the entire government being controlled by the head of a single intelligence agency is a real possibility. politicians being controlled by lone NSA employees who have dirt on them is also a possibility.

the system can be exploited by anyone in the chain. that is why we cannot trust anyone to have these powers.

If they want to reveal porn habits of anyone, they should be forced to reveal ALL their porn habits too, and first. I'm interested in what the public would say about the NSA director's habits.

The NSA director doesn't make any claims of being morally right to the best of my knowledge, so there would not be as much of an uproar.

the NSA deals in private information that has the same harmful capacity to destroy a person's chances of being elected, or being listened to by a particular group which otherwise would have supported them.

no one really cares about porn or what you did on the internet, however real life things you have done, do matter and people do care about those things, the NSA would probably collect data from phone calls, and close monitoring of their activity for a long while, the internet would obviously be another tool but i don't think porn is really that important

with sufficient dirt on someone, they could demand that they do virtually everything.
