The Freelancer game was just an easy and maybe bad example; but the other ones that came in my mind are even less known.
You shouldn't be forced at all to 'stick' with a faction of course - freedom of how/what you play is an integral part of Starsonata gaming experience I believe (well you need to fight AIs to lvl) - but you could, with all it benefits and drawbacks. I'll try another example to clear it up: You could do some normal tranporting miss. for EF, getting the gear reward, and doing the same for the pirates but if your getting 'high ranked' in EF - a true Peacemaker - and with it acquiring access to the trully special gear you shouldn't be able to hang around with the pirates as one of their renowened captains as well in the same manner.
I don't want to make a suggestion - my intention is to get clarification on the faction player relation.
