Jeff, I don't think there is a real question here... just make the change. The additional horse power under the hood will do wonders for SS.

When you expierence a serious bout of lag, the type where all your shots miss and the AI's all float off into the distance, that isn't connection lag because everyone everywhere recieves it simultaneously. Even with a higher ping, having more grunt in the new server will help a lot. I'm with Thummper here, its a better server, its cheaper, it will have little or no adverse affect. (Except possible downtime whilst the change is in progress) so it's a pretty easy decision

I wont post what my ping tiems are since i use satelit and my ping times are way to variable from one moment to the next. Looking at most players ping times i doubt theyd see a difference. The better server could be a huge help with some of the server side lag, general performance.
Go ahead and switch servers. P.S. my ping times can vary betwen .5 and up to 2.5 seconds. |

Normal human reaction time is >200ms, and probably greater than 300 ms - there are timers on the web that test your reaction time.
http://getyourwebsitehere.com/jswb/rttest01.html Ping != Lag in this situation I don't think. The higher ping might result in a slight variance in your ability to dodge a bullet, but lag is caused byt he server being overwhelmed. Doubling the server Horsepower should result in a net decrease in perceived lag. I have done large scale performance projects for almost a decade, and never once seen people complain more on bigger hardware. With your new multithreading code in Jeff, this would give the server a lot more frames per second and result in considerably less perceived lag. My average response time on that website linked above was 270ms Liquidweb = 123ms kattare = 143ms |
