Today we suffered a rollback of about 24 hours because the first time we ran the game on the new server, we accidentally ran it as root. After the patch yesterday it ran as non-root and was unable to save any files because the directory for the save was created under root the first time.

I am really sorry for this mistake and all that everyone has lost because of it.

I know it doesn't compensate, but just for fun as partial compensation, I am tripling the mod rate of items found in DG's for the next 24 hours.

oh great, nice try but triple rate for 24hrs isnt much. try the rest of the weekend and you might get a better response.

Also could we get a word on whether on not an extra day will be tacked onto the end of our subs?

We basically royally screwed up. There was nothing we could do once we discovered the problem this evening. There was literally no data to restore from. The data failed to write.

I literally feel sick to my stomach about the situation today. Probably not as bad you the player but still awful. We'll continue to discuss what we can do to restore faith in SS about this.

Im no computer whiz but I understand why the RB was 24 instead of 1 or 2 hrs.

Could we get an answer as to why several players were told it was cool to work on colonys, go lvl, go DG and whatnot when a hour later a RB was forced?

Wouldnt have made more sense to check the logs and refund those players lost creds and/or items?

well due to the point they allready stated, when they screwed up, it probably wasnt possible to retrive those records... you know when it comes to computers sometimes its not just as easy as copy and paste. and this mistake is a problem that could prolly be fixed by making all money drops tripple for a day rather than just DG drops... but hey what do i know im just a ftp (again) and i have absolutly no programing experiance... i just make guesses in horribly misspelled posts baised on common since

Because I didn't realize how badly things were messed up because the DB had been saving while the main save files hadn't. When we figured that out, we decided to roll both the DB and the save files back to the same point so that everything would be in sync.

I can leave the triple chance at modded DG loot for the rest of the weekend.

A thought occured to me........ Isnt there a chmod command that could give right access to all users ? Shouldnt the server have been able to write then, and just wait for the next savepoint to save both DB and file ?

Even if they had chmod'ed the files, they would've had to HUP the server for the state to update.. I'm not really familiar with how the SS server stuff works, but I do know from expierence that changing permissions on the fly has the potential for trouble. The admins made the only logical call given the circumstances.. Thank being said..

If this is a transition to linux from a non-unix OS it has gone REMARKABLY well, and If a few rollbacks is the worst of it, than you guys truely do have you shit together.. I've migrated my fair share of band-aid ridden programming.. It never goes off with out a few bumps, and I'd rather the be this than someone haxing the server and deleting everthing or something diabolical..

you need to HUP the darn thing if the app opens files at startup

if the thing tries to open file and write and then close file when needed, then chmod should be enough. thats if the data doesn't depend on previously written data
