Post Re: Big Rollback today
the server running as root was an accident, but since it was already up and people on it, we decided to let it run till the next down time. It was my mistake to forget about the save file, im not denying it, since it wouldnt change anything.
The good thing tho, is that we noticed after only a day, the server could had run a week or so in such state, then it would had been a lot worse. I made sure that the server couldnt be started as root again, error or not ;).

A thought occured to me........ Isnt there a chmod command that could give right access to all users ? Shouldnt the server have been able to write then, and just wait for the next savepoint to save both DB and file ?

If the chmod/chown had been done while the server was going, then possibly, possibly not, that depends on how the app works, how it saves files, and whether it closes the filehandle after each save, or keeps it open and just streams to it, how it handles midstream changes and sig hups. But if the crash occurred, and only then did the devs figure out things weren't being saved, then the data was already gone, so a chmod/chown would be closing the gates after the horses were out of the barn, grown old, died, and whose foals were grown and died.

chmod, btw, would almost certainly required changing it to universally open permissions, which is just fail in so many ways it makes my sysadmin heart blacken just a little bit more.

chown might have been the better bet, but again, it all depends on what was going on, when, and how.

Doing chown while the server was running would (most likely) have let us avoid the RB, yes, but as surmised above, we only discovered the problem after the server had crashed.

sweet christ...

Jon and Jeff, you don't need to fell sick or apologize over and over. We understand what the problem was and am happy that you were able to find a solution. We all knew that there was some risk when switching to the new server, but in the long run it will make the game much more enjoyable since it will reduce lag. Anyone who tells you otherwise isn't worth listening to...

Mistakes are ok, thanks for the info on whats up and thanks for working to reduce our lag and make the game more fun.

You know, if space spartan had never played ss in the first place it could have altered the time line in ways we could never imagine. meaning that there is a good chance this RB would never have happened. Therefore this is all space spartan's fault.

lets all take our frustrations out on him!

GO GETTEM!
