Post Very High Graphics Vs. Low Graphics - Backgrounds
I know which one I'd choose.

Very High:

Low: Image

Why does low graphics have the good background?

Time Warp

P.S. I'd be choosing low.

You don't want "Low". 75% or higher of the galaxies have a Camouflage coloring/pattern. It's just not pretty with the all the browns, greens, yellow, black all mixed together.

If I want to change the color of a galaxy though I just have to leave and come back and it generates a whole new set of ugly. Red & Brown, Green & Brown, Brown & Teal, Red & Teal.

Eventually it runs out of ugly and you start generating pretty things like..

Fixed in the client update from last night. Run your patchbot to get the latest.

About the colors - each galaxy specifies two seed colors which are used to generate the background. We don't currently have much in the way of an intelligent algorithm for picking these colors for the random gals. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Jump in, green & brown, .. Jump out and in again.. Blue & Red... Out/In... yellow & tan.
I don't think

is working correctly.

Maybe remove the color code for brown? Or maybe a way to disable the advanced backgrounds because looking at ..

75% of the time or higher when it's much more vivid is horribly unpleasant.

What galaxy are you in where the backgrounds are changing? I think all the randomly generated galaxies do have fixed values, it's just that most custom galaxies, like Sol, Shadow, FM, etc, have no values set, so are probably getting random every time until we hard-code values for them.

Although I've been flying around and can't find a gal where the background colors change randomly.

Edit:

Looking at the code more, it looks like it only uses one color as the base, which is the star color as used in C1. It then makes a bunch of random bits which make the background with random x, y, z centers, and takes the color of each bit as being an interpolation from (0, 0, 0) to the star color along the z distance. That interpolation is where all the other colors come from. Each bit is additive on top of each other, so if you have one pixel that is (256, 128, 0) and that gets overlaid with a pixel of (128, 64, 0), the result would be (256, 192, 0).

I'm still thinking some galaxies might benifit from using distant image planes of real nebulas. Even though it will not move much in relation to the camera, it's not a big deal since the nebula would be several light years away anyways.
