When AI is killed, coins inherit players ship velocity. That means it moves aways from player.
In my opinion, coin's velocity was intended to be inverted so it moves towards player, but it was overlooked in code.

As my math teacher always used to say, check your signs.

They shouldn't even use game physics to fly to the player – it's very unreliable.

True. If it were inverted, they would fly away form player when player moves away from killing site. It's bad either way.

Direct deposit onto the player(s) responsible for the kill would be nice...

I think there were suggestions years ago to replace coins with bounties on AIs. Same way as bounties currently work, you would collect monies right after kill.

Or like they do in Diablo 3 (and probably a lot of other games) where the coins just fly directly to the player without having to use the game physics. Right now they have inertia which is really difficult to program properly.

Diablo 3 you have to walk over the pile of gold to pick it up.

Not if you have +pick up radius, right?

All that does is make the area underneath you larger. You still have to walk "over" it. The circle is just bigger.

I don't know what I'm remembering but I've definitely seen games where coins fly to you, they just don't restrict themselves to game physics.
