Your UV map is a little off. Well, the UV map is probably fine, but the way you textured it, there are some untextured areas. The reason for using a high contrast background when you texture is so you can see any misalignments with the texture in relation to the UVs.
I've attached a render and a layout to show what i'm talking about.

Depending on what image editing software you use, I can give you some tips for making the UV lines really clean.
