Ok, I don't get what's going on now. I looked at two models that I could quickly access in game that had Normal maps, the GhostShip and Mars, both had no dynamicly lit bumps as you can see in the below pics. I'm now wondering how normals are better. Really, at full quality, full-antialiasing graphics, zooming right in on a a texture reveals the apparent highlights to be static, uniteresting and simplistic. Turned away from and towards the Sun, the hilights from the normal map on the Ghostship did not behave dynamically.

I also noticed that many planet textures are accompanied by actual bump and specularity maps, so it seems it can be done. Having dyanamic lighting on bumpmaps saves on polys while keeping cool, believable details.

Ok, I've modified the textures to be C2-friendly. I'll email the model and textures to Jeff later. I think they turned out nicely. Not as nice as they look rendered in Maya, but meh.

I would bump up the contrast a bit on the detail bits of the texture if you can, but totaly loving that redo, especially the one on the end.

Yea, the seams between hull panels could use a bit more contrast; I'll get to that tomorrow. I'd also like to direct everyone's attention to the Sketches thread I made; It'd be nice if everyone is able to produce rough models before commiting to making it in 3D. This way other testers and staff can give feedback and critiques before too much time is spent on one model or texture only for it to not be used. :wink:

Ok, I've finished up some details on the Spearhead ships and sent the model and textures off to JeffL. Here's a preview, but note that these are Maya renderings and not how the game engine will render them.

Nice job, Its always a good idea to have a mix of large and small details, makes every zoom level look good and i think this ship will be a good example of this.

But on an unrelated note, I couldn't help noticing that the Ghostship posted earlier in this thread looks suspiciously like The Destiny from Stargate Universe. Just a bit.

It's vague, but then again the Ghostship design is older than SGU I belive. (THEY STOLE IT FROM US!)
