So tonight we figured out a little tweak that causes the server to run roughly 10x faster than it does now. One of those things that is totally not obvious, but in hind sight seems like it should have been.
So... do we want rof cap to be 10x more and responsiveness to jumping and docking 10x more, or the uni 10x bigger, or some combination? (Though we will likely add in some kind of artificial rof cap so people don't get client lag from too many bullets.) I think it would be fun to make the next uni 2 or 3 times bigger by adding more layers, what do you guys think? _________________ For support, please create a support ticket here and I will get back to you as soon as possible. http://www.facepalm.org there is a point where it becomes difficult to get any higher ROF. Any chance we could get some input from high end SD's to see what that is, then set the hard cap around there? EDIT: I just did some little calculations, it seems like about the fastest you could fire under all but the most absolutely extreme circumstances is about 25 shots per second. The facepalm was just that you realized this now, rather than earlier
I mean, you spend loads of time trying to make the server go faster, all that effort, and then you realize "oh, we can make the server run 10x faster with this little trick!" Yeah I wouldn't recommend upping the RoF cap, I think being able to fire 10 times a second is fine as it is...new layers would be cool though, maybe content devs could use this and put in warp navigation 5 perhaps? Responsiveness is what I'd like to see more than anything really...but then again, I wouldn't recommend using all of this new found speed up straight away, but making it available as a buffer when the server load is especially high such as in peak times or uni resets...but then you guys probably already know that, so meh. |

Yeah, this is going to make things way more responsive. Jey already has a test server running the uni from right before the reset full of bases and trading slaves 9x faster than before, and the current uni is running more than 10x faster. Hopefully we can get this live in the next patch. This is a great day for Star Sonata! =)

Amazon EC2 has a High-Memory Quadruple Extra Large Instance that we could get with 68 gb of memory. That one would have enough memory to grow the universe by 15x without needing to even implement any kind of sharding. Our scaling problems for the foreseeable future have just been magically vanished. We can now scale up to about 18k p2p's I think before we have to implement sharding. Time to start advertising again.

Would this increased server speed make it possible to extend the range cap beyond 10k without massive desync of the bullets? That would be a nice use for some of the new performance.
Now, for the big one: Will it finally be possible to use some of the extra performance to lift the current account base slot restrictions? I'd love to see a bigger uni AND have the ability to use the base slots from all of my alts, or at least a larger percentage of them. Increasing the Rof cap may actually cause a balance issue. It's only certain classes and setups that can even approach the current limits, and the increase would make them much more powerful while not really benefitting other classes at all. _________________ pip8786 wrote: Dorin Nube... you win the best post on the forums ever award. wild space 1,5x bigger 2 more layers like perilous but worse rof cap at 30Hz responsiveness increased as much as possible |
