Post Re: Need Some Ships
Instead of trying to make it look like a city, why don't you guys try to make it look like a small bridge sitting on top of the rock? Like the rock is the hull itself, but there is a human bridge perched on top?

Pretend the smooth (from a distance) parts of the SSD is the rock. You see what a bridge would look like if sitting on top of said rock?

Syberian that looks incredibly cool. Yeah that looks like it'd be a challenge to texture.

Procedural texturing perhaps? Since it's crystalline and all.

EDIT: I might play around with something later today. Been a while since I did modeling for SS.

EDIT EDIT: For the light and heavy fighters, do you want them to be longer on the vertical axis or the lateral axis?

EDIT EDIT EDIT oy...:

Attached is a pic of the unused Spearhead model. It's kinda crystalline in shape, so perhaps something similar to it for a LF?

I dunno if this is worth anything, but after seeing you guys make such epic ships i thought i would get blender, and having nothing to do with ships, i made this as my first model, hoping to get better and more efficient with blender so i can someday make some better ships:

Nothing happened to it. Still have no ships. Although I talked to another Dev a few days ago and may try his hand at making me some models.

Maybe you could use mini picks, or pieces of picks?

Maybe....What I've done so far is just retexture current ships. But the dev I was talking to had a really cool idea for interchangeable asteroid/ crystal formation model pairs that would allow for some pretty cool ship customizations.

These were some of my attempts:

Hopefully I'll have the zone up soon for testing on test server. As we get models and textures I'll add them there.

The azure Copperlite looks alright, but that sphere perched on top of that Tear looks hideous.

For a ship called the Zircon:

For the Azurite:

I got some crystal models and I've been retexturing our current asteroid models. I'm getting some pretty interesting effects. These should be up on test in the next few days if you want to take a look.

Can you elaborate on this?

Post Re: Need Some Ships
So I've been thinking about this thread a bit and i've come up with a couple of concepts, one of which I modeled. First, here's a pen sketch I did at my desk that was pretty quick. I'm not sure how elaborate you want to go considering the OP said "simple crystalline", but here are some ideas anyways.

Now for the model:

Questions/comments/concerns are welcome. I'm not sure if it's too "cartoony" for what you were envisioning, but the whole bridge on a rock idea is hard to implement easily.

The model is really rough; no smoothing, no optimizing, no nothing. Looking more for feedback about the concept i've run with and not so much why the model looks dumpy.
