Which graphics do you prefer. Graphics only, please do not let the old business model/player activity play a part in this decision. Just curious, I don't play.

With the recent improvements I prefer c2. Ships still need a serious face lift, though.

Should start with the low tech ships, the current players can live with the old designs for another year Making the game more appealing to new players should be prioritized.
And maybe change the rats into a family of different type of container inspired ships. The rats are cool and all, but kinda a deal breaker for many since it is a space game. Even if it is mechanical rats or whatever. Didn't really read the mission text to learn the lore. |

Dude the space rats are fucking cute as hell, don't get rid of them!
The people that wouldn't play because there are space rats are not the type of people that are going to play the game anyway. (And I have a friend who said that exact thing, "Rats in space? Fuck this game." but he's a dweeb anyway lol.) _________________ http://www.starsonata.com/suggestions |

I prefered c1 graphics wise because it was so simple and you could edit ships in paint in around 10 secs for personal amusement, c2 beats it hands down in gameplay/features without a doubt though

Holy fuck C1, look at this shit:
old: Attachment: The_Guardian_of_The_Lyceum.jpg new: Attachment: 20160801195910_1.jpg Disgraceful. Devs, I love you guys, you do good work, but stylistically C2 was far worse than C1. 2D is not some dying format, and 3D is not the end-all be-all. We should have stuck with 2D, maybe redevelop the client to incorporate 3d when desirable. 3d ships are generally too small to see detail, they're a completely different 'tone' stylistically as well, C1 was generally mildly cartoonish (fitting the general theme of the game), while c2 is far more serious yet-still-random science fiction. And on that point, C1 was COMPLETELY different ambiance wise. The only soundtrack was the various ambiance you could hear, punctuated by the sounds of combat and muffled by the sheer silence of the void. This contrasted a little with the cartoony theme, but in my opinion it worked. C2 completely threw this out and gave you a upbeat soundtrack for literally everywhere. 3D effects and ships basically decreased the detail of the game, as everything is so zoomed out you can barely see any detail, instead of having 2d sprites specifically designed for a 2d view. Particle effects that would supposedly be better in 3D are infact much worse, and the interesting effects that 3d brought to the table such as distortion are generally used poorly. The tone of the game changed completely, the visuals both downgraded and changed completely. C2 was a godsend as far as UI and internal mechanics (ignoring collision) are concerned, but it completely and utterly fucked up the visuals and overall feel of the game. That's not to say this cannot be fixed, C2 could absolutely be improved, though I don't know if it would ever be quite as good as C1 without a lot of work. But there are many changes that would not be horribly difficult, such as improving the particle effects. However, this is not any made any easier when all we have to go off of is the occasional screenshot of client 1. It has been over HALF A DECADE since C2 was released and C1 was permanently retired, we have nothing but our nostalgia-addled memories to work with. If we want to improve the aspects of C2 that pale in comparison to C1, we first need actual access to C1. Everyone is used to the details of C2 now, even though many of them are inferior to C1, so if we want to improve anything we must be able to look at C1. And for that, we need a server to connect to. You don't have to run a dedicated server for C1. You don't have to somehow get C1 to work on new servers, or shoehorn the graphics of C1 into C2 to create a Frankenstein's monster of a client. Just release the C1 server executable, many of us are fully capable of running our own local server to connect to. We don't need to play with other players, we don't need to actually run a 24/7 server, we just need to see what it LOOKS like. It is a 6 year old executable for a completely outdated client. There is virtually no reason to be afraid to release it, and in doing so you would help players vastly improve the client we have now. /rant Edit: I asked sundog and apparently no one saved a copy of the old server code. Fuck. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post. Last edited by buggy123 on Thu Aug 04, 2016 2:03 am, edited 1 time in total. |

SS1 is visually superior, at least. I cant make a judgement on the rest.
I've been thinking ss2 could potentially look way better if it had better shaders, the one right now is pretty 2006. I dont know what the engine is capable of but the right shader could make the game look less like a ps2 era game with medicore particle effects and more like a heavily stylized pc indie game with awesome particles. Seriously consider doing this. |
